About Valerie

My counseling experience began as a lay leader in the marriage ministry at my church in the late 90’s. For over nine years, I served as a certified marriage mentor, working with married and engaged couples. I also co-led a marriage enrichment ministry, developing and teaching seminars and workshops to strengthen and grow marriages both locally and internationally.

Encouraged by the couples I mentored, I returned to school to complete a masters degree in mental health counseling. My practice serves individuals, couples and families. I specialize in couples therapy, using Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy. I also treat anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, life transitions and of course, all relational issues.

A Little More About Me

Yes, that is me! I climbed my first mountain, via Ferrata, August 2019, in Banff, Canada, following a lifetime fear of heights – truly!

I have been married since 1971, though my husband and I would admit we have experienced several “different” marriages, coming through many difficulties, some of which you may be facing now.

I have four married children and nine grandchildren and I love spending time laughing, learning and sharing life with them.

I have a voracious love for learning, and nature. I am generally reading 2-4 books at a time, while listening to one on Audible as well. I experience nature by tending to my flower gardens, walking or biking in local forest preserves and parks and, when able, hiking the national parks.

As I mature, I increasingly appreciate the necessity of play and new experiences, often exploring discounted opportunities to try something new and different, as well as places to visit.

I would love to work with you to overcome whatever fears you face or to increase your ability to laugh, play and get the most out of your life.
